Charles Barkley has a personal net worth of $20 million, but in the world of sports, it’s not uncommon for athletes to make mistakes. This time, he made a huge one in an attempt to save his team.

Charles Barkley may not be a household name to the casual sports fan, but he is to the average NBA fan. For many, his name brings up images of a mouthy, arrogant, and egotistical basketball player that went beyond the limits of what was acceptable in professional sports. He was never known for winning awards or taking effort to improve his game. The only thing he really cared about was winning. Because of this, many people were shocked when he retired from the NBA because he didn’t have a backup plan to make a living after basketball.

Charles Barkley has been one of the most recognizable athletes in sports for most of his life. He’s an NBA Hall of Famer who was inducted in 2007, he’s the only athlete in history to score over 4,000 points, grabbed over 2,000 rebounds, and passed over 1,000 assists in the NBA. But, in the final years of his playing career, he struggled to stay relevant in the sport.

Charles Barkley never met a scandal he didn’t want to be a part of. Barkley has a reputation for off-the-court theatrics as a player, from brushing off any duties as a role model to sometimes throwing fans through windows. As a result, he had a few run-ins with the NBA’s disciplinary system. During his Hall of Fame career, his propensity for chastising referees alone cost him almost $50,000.

Barkley continues to enjoy life on his own terms, even after retirement. He isn’t scared to adopt positions that are politically controversial, and he isn’t hesitant to express what he believes. Colorful is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to characterizing Barkley.

Charles Barkley had a fun, albeit ringless, career.

Before entering the 1984 NBA Draft, Charles Barkley guided Auburn to its first-ever NCAA Tournament trip. Despite his claims that he attempted to gain weight in order to deter the Philadelphia 76ers from selecting him with the fifth overall selection, the Sixers did so.

Barkley was an All-NBA pick seven times during his eight seasons in Philadelphia, but the Sixers never progressed beyond the conference finals. While at Auburn, Barkley was known as the Round Mound of Rebounds, as he led the NBA in offensive rebounds three times and led the league in rebounds per game in 1986–87. Despite being listed as 6-foot-6 and playing power forward, this is true.

He was traded to the Phoenix Suns, where he won the NBA MVP award and led the club to the NBA Finals in 1992–93. Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls put an end to Barkley’s title hopes, and he never returned to the finals. Barkley pushed for a trade to the Houston Rockets after four years in Phoenix. Despite having Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, and (briefly) Scottie Pippen on the roster, that club never won a championship.

Barkley tore his quadriceps tendon in December 1999. Although the injury was thought to be career-ending, he recovered to play six minutes in the Rockets’ season finale, scoring a basket before retiring.

Following that, he went on to have a colorful and contentious second career as a studio commentator for TNT’s Inside the NBA. Many programs include his never-ending fights with Shaquille O’Neal.

Barkley couldn’t help but criticize the officials.

Charles Barkley, who was never afraid to express himself, lost a lot of money as a player because he couldn’t stop talking about what he thought was poor refereeing.

According to ESPN, it all came to a climax in December 1999, when the NBA fined Barkley $20,000 for slamming referee Mike Mathis.

“There was only one reason we lost the game: Mike Mathis. I’m not going to say anything more about it. He’s a terrible official. He’s been a liability for the whole time I’ve been in the league. I detest that he’s back in the league because he cost us the game.”

After accusations of tax fraud, Mathis was one of many officials who resigned in 1998. The following season, he returned.

Barkley had previously received small penalties for the same infraction, but he was not about to give up.

“This is the third or fourth time it’s occurred. They paid $10,000 to $15,000 for me. It’s simply gotten worse. I’ll say anything if I believe an official is terrible. I don’t think about it, and you shouldn’t either, dude. All of them are tax deductible.”

Despite the league’s financial pinches, Barkley performed well.

In the NBA, Charles Barkley made more than $40 million.

During his 16-year NBA career, Charles Barkley earned $40.6 million in salary. He earned the highest money in a season in 1999–00, when he earned $9 million.

Six NBA players, including Stephen Curry, John Wall, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant, and LeBron James, will earn more money in the 2021–22 season than Barkley did in his entire career. It’s a different time period.

Barkley, on the other hand, has done very well for himself. He has a net worth of $50 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. It may be more, but he’s lost anywhere from $10 million to $30 million in gaming losses.

In his position with TNT, he allegedly earns $6 million each year, plus sponsorship money. Barkley most recently hosted an event at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama, to encourage people to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

In typical Charles Barkley form, he didn’t mince words when it came to his message. However, if he was ready to throw away tens of thousands of dollars over poor officiating, saying anything without a monetary consequence isn’t such a huge issue.

Charles Barkley is either a terrible NBA player or a genius social media athlete.  Either way, he’s made a lot of money in the last 20 years, but recently lost his job when he began sharing some of his earnings with his former employer, the Phoenix Suns.  According to TMZ, Barkley left behind $45,000 in his bank account when he walked away from the team, most of which was spent on a fancy limousine ride for himself, with most of the rest spent on a Vegas trip to celebrate the Suns’ season with teammate Steve Nash..
